Plassen
Hosts: Olav and Ellen B. Nordstoga, 3890 Vinje
Plassen is the farm where the poet and journalist Aasmund O.Vinje grew up, and the home and workplace of the Nordstoga family. Vinjestoga, the childhood home of Aa. O.Vinje, stands close to the other farm buildings, as it did 150 years ago. It is one the best examples of a cotter’s cottage in upper Telemark.
Mannestoga is a two story log cabain built in the 1930’s. It was later dismantled to make room for the new farmhouse at Plassen. The cabin was rebuilt in 1997, and is now furnished with a modern kitchen, bathroom with shower and toilet, and a living room (with a canopy bed and fireplace) on the first floor. Two large bedrooms, toilet and sink on the second floor. Beds for 5 adults and 4 children. A cozy and charming cabin!
The farm activities are varied: production of milk, vegetables and traditional food, cultural programs and other tourist services. Ellen Nordstoga also runs Mjonøy handicraft and culture center, and is one of the foremost performers of traditional song and dance in Telemark. She has been awarded Vinje Township’s Culture Prize. Plassen and Mjonøy have been awarded Olav’s Rose, Norwegian Heritage’s quality seal.
